The Night is a Strawberry: anniversary

Reading may seem like a solitary pleasure, but we do not believe it is so. As we read, we intimately interact with writers, the worlds they create, and our own inner selves as well as the real world that surrounds us. Some of us are also blessed enough to have friends to share the experience with.

While discussing the idyllic village of Three Pines and the captivating characters author Louise Penny created in the Inspector Gamache books, we were aware of the sensory pleasure to be had in the meals described. Olivier’s Bistro, Gabri’s baking, and dinners at the Morrow’s can easily make us salivate while reading the books… Louise Penny's books, are a wonderful entrée into a sensual world, where each book is a season, capturing its mood and flavours, and contributing to the layers of meaning about the characters, who are marvellously revealed over the series.

At one point, a daydream of going through the series with a notebook in hand, writing down all these meals and later cooking them, took shape. This is our "notebook". We hope you enjoy this literary-culinary-sensory-philosophical journey.

How could we?!!!

I cannot believe we missed our one year anniversary and didn't celebrate properly.

What with my move, the new book coming out, and settling in, I missed it.

Thank you all for joining us on this journey. It's incredible that we have been posting for a year and there are so many recipes still ahead of us.

Who Are We?

Amy: I'm an avid reader who loves to eat, but am neither a writer or cook by trade. These books are inspiring enough for me to attempt both. I'm the wife of a brilliant man who likes to remind everyone that his real name is Peter Pan. I have an awesome 7-year old son who has taught me more than I have ever taught him. And, finally, I'm a Pediatric Doctor who loves her patients and their parents dearly, and have a second degree in human development since I believe that medical practice is frequently more about psychology than physiology. I have, since beginning this blog, changed countries, continents, and put my career on hold... I'm not sure where I fit in professionally right now, but I'm still an avid reader, a wife and mother, and fascinated by people and what makes them do and think and feel what they do. Oh! And I cook better now, too.

Libby: Over recent years, I've come into an ever-expanding world of books and food, and come to understand, possibly more than any other time in my life, what they both can offer in terms of community, comfort, creativity, and sensual experience and appreciation! I love to garden and grow things to eat and use, as well as create a safe and sustainable environment for creatures (including the bees that I keep) that inhabit and pass through it. I enjoy cooking with fresh, seasonal produce and the understanding of ingredients and balance of flavour that can be shared and enjoyed with others. I am a painter and am inspired by the natural world and plants, both of which feature (more metaphorically than literally) in my works.
